Fall UpSki News-'06

John (co-inventor of UpSki and owner of VertexPhoto.com) and Sara Stanford had good success with a series of state and national record attempts in sky diving this summer. However, John's injuries from a jump plane crash ('86) in which he was one of two survivors finally caught up with him and following back surgery in the late summer he has decided to retire from the sport following his Doctors recommendation. The recommendation went something like "If you don't stop risking strong opening shocks you could spend the rest of your life in severe pain". John's passion for photography and the invention of unique equipment for professional photographers should keep him busy.

Every year John sews up and we test new concepts and equipment improvements. The bottom line, especially if you own an UpSki, is that very little has changed over the years. The canopy material is better and the harness design is more comfortable for all day use but the overall design is the same. How do we fair with the increased popularity of Kite Boarding? Very well, we are still the only traction kite sport and equipment designed for steep alpine ascent.

As I write this, October 26th, Loveland Ski area is reporting 22 inches of new, there is a foot in my yard. This year we are going to try out pod casting to keep you up on what we are doing, how we are finding the backcountry. Click on the link below and in the left column.

This late spring, May 27th, UpSkiers Mike Cutherbertson, Kristie and Phil Huff, and new guy (but old patrol buddy) Dan Moroz of 33 years on the Copper Mountain Ski Patrol, had a good day near Independence Pass on Blue Peak. The day was expected to be windy and no other than famous person Lou Dawson reported strong winds at the 13,777 foot summit. Lou was skiing out as we were gearing up and he also reported that there was little corn due to the cooler than normal temperatures and high winds. UpSkiers have been skiing on the pass since the mid-1980's, here is a story posted on the first UpSki Website in the mid 1990's.

Jon Harrington and Greg Dietl have been UpSkiing for the camera and as a result there are a bunch of new photos for the website. New Slideshow with Greg on Loveland Pass and with Jon Harrington on the White Wave

The new "light weight UpSki" development plan continues, here are earlier articles that cover some of our work in that area. From the Fall 05 UpSki News and The January News. The April 06 issue is here.

A tribute to Morten Svatun and links to Norway's UpSki and Skiseil websites are located here. Chiharu Fujii and Dan Graybill's of Fort Lewis College in Durango , their first UpSki story is here.
