Peak 9 Outing
Bud Robinson led a group of UpSkiers on a hike & UpSki back country adventure above Breckenridge Colorado, April 1, 2004
In the search for new Wind Mountaineering routes, UpSkiers rode the Mercury Chair to the 11,460 foot level of the Breckenridge Ski Area during a rare South East wind event recently. A short skin up to the Back Country Gate would be all that is needed in a good snow year. The Bowl between Peak 9 and Peak 8 offers lots of UpSki potential.
Low snow cover kept the group hiking to the 12,400 foot shoulder of Peak 9. There canopies were deployed and a variety of wind directions, including rotors off of Peak 10, were utilized to scale the snow field on the East side of Peak 9.
A NE flowing rotor would sweep up the valley between Peaks 9 & 10. One gust was strong enough to pull Chris Cali out of one ski as he approached the sharp clift area, see map above. A few runs were made that lifted UpSkiers beyond the 13,000 foot level just below the summit of Peak 9. Bud found a steep powder chute to make pretty tracks in on the way out..
