Kevin and Megan are still in Europe, returning shortly. Read their blogs at www.upskiing.com The usual final UpSki event for the year is on Independence Pass near Aspen Colorado. The big UpSki event was on the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend.
The winds were Epic and allowed only a couple of runs to the summit with Gusts reported nearby of +60 MPH. We had a great time, however, between 12,200 and 13,200 ft on smooth wind blown corn. Nothing but miles of great rides and turns.
A week later in June, Kevin was testing the new equipment in the same area with less wind and encoutered a vent line failure. Only a partial emergency release happened before he wound up in the rocks, all of which he captured on GoPro. What you are seeing in this video happened when 1) The vent line jammed in the new carbon-fibre reel system, and 2) only a partial "Riser Emergency Release" activation occurred. Had the winds been stronger then Kevin would have utilized the primary release system. Here is that video. This year we will fix the problem which resulted in vent line locking on the new control centers.
Last Spring Betsy and Mike hosted a Reunion Dinner for the UpSki. John and Sara Stanford were there along with a crowd of original and new UpSkiers. We collected some Vintage UpSki footage for entertainment, most of which dates back to 1986 and was lifted from old VHS tapes. Here is that footage: -Phil Huff
