SUNDAY UPDATE 12/5 FROM DEBRA & PAT
Hello PLSers! Another quick update for this Sunday, December 05, 1999. Pat had another full weekend. Cousin Barb Slegel is here from Phoenix. Yesterday Pat, Larry, Barb and Dan MacLeod spent the day goofing off and had a carryout Thai supper. Today the Wilhelms and Reeses visited. Later in the afternoon my friend Amy and I brought the makings for Christmas cookies over to Friendship House at Craig. Pat, Barb, Gaelan (my godson), Amy and I had great fun making a mess in the kitchen. We worked diligently on gingerbread cookies, sugar cookies, and Russian teacakes, most of which we didn’t burn.

Pat spent a lot of time walking this weekend. Barb is a physical therapist so she was very interested to see how Pat is doing. Tomorrow she is going to classes with Pat. I imagine Pat will sleep well tonight after all this activity. She looked good at supper, but admitted she was tired. They have been reducing her medications this past week and that might be affecting her energy level too.

Pat will have a busy time in December getting ready to go home. I believe Craig scheduled a Christmas shopping outing. Maybe we'll escape from the malls and find some nice antique shops. In the meantime Larry has been working on the logistics of the move home in a few weeks and getting caregivers lined up. We’re all looking forward to a new routine for Pat at home. Good night for now…. Debra

SUNDAY 12/5 LETTER FROM STICK & MOLE

Greetings all,

I would like to share the joy Mole and I experienced this past week during our visit with Pat. We’ve known Pat since our jr. high days in Brainerd, MN; a long time ago now. Mole and I actually hadn’t seen Pat for at least two years but when we saw each other, it was like yesterday - a true sign of friendship.

The first thing we noticed was the twinkle in Pat’s eyes; then that familiar smile. What a great feeling to see the Pat we’ve always known! It was fun and interesting to follow Pat from class to class. She is working SO hard at her tasks with, what appeared to us, the knowledge that it has to be done in order to get better. Pat always has had a determination - no surprise to those who know her, eh Larry?! She was attuned to the time, keeping on schedule with the classes. Pat did better at the memory game (done on the computer) during speech therapy than either Mole or I could have done. Her speech is the one area Pat needs the most work but after spending time with her, we know it will just be a matter of time. Pat clearly understands what is being said to her, apparent with the many appropriate smirks to our comments. With patience and coaching, she was able to get across most of her thoughts. The craig bed (with all three of us laying in comfort) led to some good conversation, remembering the old days and talking about today’s struggles. Physically, Pat can walk quite well. The physical therapist had Pat walking on a low balance beam which certainly impressed us both. Of course, she would only take 15 second rests!! There’s that determination again.

Pat obviously has been given good care, most importantly by those who love her, followed by the quality medical care. Mole and I saw a deeply caring husband, family who loves her, and more friends than one can count. It’s no wonder Pat is doing so well - she is truly blessed.

Mole and I hope that Pat got as much out of the visit as we did. It was a powerful two days for us. Thanks Larry. It was good to meet Deb, Paula, and Andrea.

Pat, you’re in our thoughts daily.

Love ya, Stick and Mole
