FRIDAY 10/1 UPDATE FROM DEBRA
Hello from Pat's room! It's Debra trying to use Pat's computer... it's going to take awhile! We've got some Water Music by Handel playing for a restful afternoon. She's been tired today. She had a short night, and maybe she needed a day for some adjustment from all the progress and changes she's been through. I've known her to enjoy a full day on the couch in lounge wear and watching video's.

This morning some of the therapists were in with her. She responded somewhat... picked up a toothbrush when asked. I asked about her speech (or lack of it right now.) The therapist said it is not possible to speak because of the type of trach she has and that Pat's not ready to yet anyway. Pat is swallowing well, keeping things separate and the therapist is confident she will make lots of progress soon. She did not like the ice cubes they tried yesterday, but the popsicle was worth trying! They might try a sucker soon. At some point they will change the trach to a smaller, less intrusive one with which she can begin making more sounds.

It looks like Monday she will enter Craig. Larry teases her that this is the last weekend to rest...boot camp begins soon!

At Craig we will be given direction about how to best support Pat. I talked briefly with the admissions people there, who said that different assistance is needed at different stages of rehab (that makes sense). There will be periods when she'll be too wiped out for visitors, and periods when lots of stimulation will be just the right thing. One of their suggestions is to bring in lots of pictures of family and friends, old times and recent. If you want to share some with her, you can send them to my house for now, or wait for the room number on Monday.

This afternoon a feeding peg was put into her stomach, making life much more comfortable for her. It went well. That's what we hope for your weekend too... may it go well for you, and may you enjoy some time with the ones you love, or love the ones you're with.

Isn't that a song?

PLS Debra
