MONDAY 10/4 UPDATE FROM LAURA HOFER

Hi All, My name is Laura Hofer, for those of you who don't know me, I am Debra Engquist's oldest son Aaron's girlfriend. I have had the opportunity to spend a few hours with Pat each day here in Denver. I am a massage therapist and have been giving Pat a good rub down each day. The improvement in Pat is visible each day!

Yesterday Dede (a friend from Sumit County) brought a beautiful pottery dish made by her daughter and it was filled with flowers and aspen leaves. Pat looked at the leaf with great curiosity, held it in her hand, and showed us a huge grin. She definitely knows what is going on around her!

Today was the big move to Craig Hospital. When I arrived Pat was up in her chair, and very eager to get a move on!The nurses disconnected all of her I.V.'s, and her stomach tube for the move. Pat is not taking any medication at all, other than something for a minor yeast infection. We took her through a tunnel that runs between Swedish and Craig, I think that the anticipation became to much because she fell right to sleep on the way.

The overall mood at the hospital is wonderful, very positive. I know that Pat felt it too, upon arrival in her new room she was wide awake and full of smiles! She has even been lying on her right side since the move, something she has not been comfortable with the past few days.

It will be a quiet day here, and all of the fun starts tomorrow. As I understand it as soon as she gets adjusted her therapy will begin. Pat will be assigned to a team to work with on a daily basis. This team will consist of a speech therapist, occupational therapist and a physical therapist. Each of these specialists will see her twice a day for a half hour at a time, as not to overwhelm her. there is also a plan to remove her current trach and replace it with a smaller one, a Jackson 6. With the smaller trach Pat will have the ability to utilize her vocal cords, and make noises as she pleases. This will also be more comfortable for Pat.

Just to update everyone Larry attended a meeting for the commity of the golf tournament and all is going well. Please sign up as a team, or as a single as soon as possible. There are a few auctions being planned one of which will be silent, for anyone that is interested. Again both golfers and non golfers are welcome!

Pat's therapy will be daily from 9:00am to 4:30pm. So she will be able to have visitors in the evening hours. For Pat's best interest the P.T. recomended no more than 2-3 visitors at one time. Also when there are a few visitors, at a time we really need to focus on having only one person speek at a time, as not to overwhelm her, and give her brain the opportunity to process her surroundings better.

Her new phone number is (303)798-8271 Room 205B If you want to send cards...etc. the address is Craig Hospital Patricia Schmidt 3425 South Clarkson St. Englewood, CO 80110

A visit is planned to Colorado for sister Kay and husband Tom, as well as Pat's mom Ardell October 20-25. I know that I look forward to seeing them all, but I am sure that Pat does even more!

That is all for now, Laura Hofer
