WEEKEND 9/24-25 UPDATE From RICHARD & kATHERINE
Richard Thompson and I (Katherine) spent all day Saturday and a few hours on Sunday with Pat. Even though it is relatively old information by now, I'll tell you about some of the things Pat did over the weekend.

We arrived at the hospital about 6:15 a.m. on Saturday and found Pat in a peaceful, sound sleep. One of the night nurses said she was awake for only 1 1/2 hours during the night but slept well the rest of the time.

Later, when Pat awoke, she manuevered her legs over the left railing of her bed and looked ready to rock 'n roll. Richard worked with her arms and hands, trying to get them to straighten and to engage her muscles. We were amazed to find that Pat could transfer the hacky sack ball from hand to hand when asked to do so. She also took the ball from Richard's hand and gave it back to him when he requested. A huge improvement since we had seen her last weekend. Pat took her left hand and adjusted her glasses on her face at one point, another movement that was new since we had seen her a week ago.

Richard was a great temporary fill-in -- he brought bagels for the nurses, kept Pat's limbs moving, her mind thinking and even turned the television to golf and football, as Larry would have done. We commented that Pat would probably throw the hacky sack ball at Richard, if she could.

We massaged Pat's feet and legs with lotion and kept her company while Larry was away. Later, the Physical Therapist arrived and sat Pat up with her legs over the bed edge. The PT supported Pat in sitting upright for some time, then had Pat stand, rotate and transfer to the big padded chair with wheels. She sat in that chair for a few hours and smiled happily when Karen, Hunter and Tanner visited. Then, with Nurse Tammy in charge, we put on her hat and Revo shades and rolled her out the front door for some sunshine and fresh air. Again, a huge Aunt Pat smile when the sun hit her face. She clearly enjoyed hearing and catching glimpses of Hunter and Tanner as they ran and played around her.

Sunday, after picking up Larry and Kim in Orem (you heard about the van breakdown from Jamie), we arrived at the hospital about 10:00 a.m., with more goodies for the nurses and a special, 8" diameter donut for Nurse Marta, a.k.a. Tilly the Hun. Kim received a big welcoming smile from Pat.

Pat was visibly happy to see Larry again, even though he started right in on working Pat's hands and arms, and turned the T.V. to football and golf. That "radiator love", as Larry refers to it, is apparent. Pat will be transferred to Denver this week, if all goes well.

I was standing at the side of the bed at one point and Pat was kind enough to touch her left hand to the front of my shirt, bringing to my attention a large piece of lint I had hanging. Looked to us like the lights were on, someone was home, heard the doorbell and is just about ready to answer the door.
